Let Us Be Your Partner in Good Oral Health
If you’re like many of our patients, you value your oral health. Not keeping your teeth for a lifetime is simply not an option! This is why preventive dentistry is so important.
We recommend that most people visit their dentist at least twice each year for examinations and cleanings. Having your teeth examined by the dentist regularly is the best way to stay on top of your oral health. Regular checkups allow us to make sure that problems are discovered while they are still small and easier and less expensive to treat.
At Huffman Family Dentistry and Lenoir Family Dentistry, Dr. Mary Huffman, Dr. Robbie Sheffield, and the rest of the team look forward to helping you and your family make sure you keep your teeth for a lifetime!
Without Healthy Gums, You Can’t Have Healthy Teeth
Many people think that just because they brush and floss each day, their gums are healthy.
The problem with that belief is that even the most diligent home dental care cannot reach all of the nooks and crannies of the mouth like a hygienist’s tools can. Plaque that builds up—and it builds up in everyone—calcifies and can only be removed with special dental tools. Without professional cleanings, calcified plaque, or tartar, can continue to build and eventually lead to gum disease.
If your gums aren’t healthy, neither are your teeth.
Gum disease often begins silently, with people completely unaware they have it. When no symptoms are present, the only way to know something might be amiss is through regular dental checkups. By the time your gums are bleeding—or worse, pus or pockets develop between your gums and teeth—gum disease has infiltrated your mouth.
According to the National Institute of Dental and Cranial Research and others, gum disease is the most common reason for tooth loss in this country. However, gum disease is preventable—and treatable—with regular visits to your dentist.
Oral Health and the Connection to Overall Health
Many people don’t realize how important a healthy mouth is to the wellness of the rest of their body. Studies have linked a mouth with untreated infection to other diseases, such as heart attack, stroke, and even some types of cancer.
Although good home care is important, nothing can replace regular examinations and professional cleanings. When problems are detected early, treatment can be provided before the problems grow bigger and require further intervention.
Our practice also offers such preventive care as dental sealants. These provide a physical barrier on the back molars to help prevent bacteria from settling into deep grooves.
We also provide fluoride treatments for all ages. Fluoride varnish can be brushed on the teeth a couple times a year to help keep teeth cavity-free.
Healthy Mouths Start Young
Because we are a general dentistry practice, we welcome children of all ages. We can help make sure they learn proper brushing and flossing techniques. We will also teach parents of children who are too young to do it themselves.
Children who start going to the dentist when they are young tend to have less anxiety about visiting the dentist when they are older. They also tend to visit the dentist more regularly as adults.
Good oral care habits that start young set children on track for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
